KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Nationally-ranked No. 12 East Stroudsburg played a game befitting of its spot in the poll, Wednesday, scoring 15 unanswered first-half goals in a 20-3 PSAC East victory over the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team at Keystone Field.
The Maroon and Gold lost 11-of-16 draw controls and committed 15 turnovers as things quickly unraveled after the opening whistle.
Emily Mitarotonda, Gianna Leduc and Kiki Fitzpatrick scored for the Warriors (5-1, 4-1 PSAC East) in the first five minutes and they'd add four more markers before the game was 10 minutes old.
Though the game was out of reach by halftime, the Bears (1-5, 1-4 PSAC East) competed for the entire 60 minutes and showed much better in the second half.
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) collected her eighth goal of the season just under five minutes into the half with a Warrior off for a yellow card. Ten minutes later,
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) netted her team-leading 11th goal.
It took just 60 seconds from Hurd's goal for the Bears to get another as
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) connected on a free-position attempt to make it 16-3.
Besides the three goals, Kutztown's game was much more refined in other areas over the final 30 minutes. They had just one more turnover than ESU, were 5-of-6 on clears (1-of-10 in the first half), equaled the Warriors in shots (9-9) and held a 5-4 edge in draws.
Overall, ESU outshot the Bears 31-10 after a 22-1 first-half barrage.The Warriors were 15-of-17 on clears and picked up 21 ground balls to KU's 15.
Sophomore defender
Brooke-Lynn Grim (Abbottstown, Pa./New Oxford) forced a game-high three turnovers and had a ground ball, while
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) led the Bears with four draw controls.
Emily Mitarotonda was one of two Warriors to register four-goal afternoons and totaled a game-high five points. Shannon Dent also had four, with Hana Cicerelle and Madison Bagatta collecting hat tricks.
Kutztown has another tough game on the horizon, Saturday, as it travels to No. 4 West Chester for a 1 p.m. start.
