Golden Bears sink Shippensburg for first win of the season

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Playing its third straight home match, Kutztown women's tennis broke into the win column for the first time this season, 7-0, over PSAC East foe Shippensburg on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Bears swept singles competition and won two-of-three matches in doubles to post the shutout. Monday's match was originally scheduled to take place this coming Wednesday, but was bumped up due to a rainy midweek forecast.

Amanda Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy), Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) were victorious in both doubles and singles for the Maroon and Gold (1-2, 1-2 PSAC East).

Kutztown's No. 2 doubles team of Grebosky and Marks blanked Shippensburg's (0-1, 0-1 PSAC East) tandem of Brighid Cantwell and Kayla Tryanski 6-0. Tomczyk and Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) followed with a 6-3 win at No. 3 to secure the doubles point for the hosts.

Though the Raiders won first doubles, singles play heavily favored KU to the tune of five straight set wins and Grebosky's comeback win in a third-set proset at No. 2.

There were a number of dominant performances by the Bears, as Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) won first singles 6-1, 6-1 over Skylar Walder, Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) won third singles over Cantwell 6-1, 6-0, Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) triumped at fifth singles against Merel Hoekstra 6-1, 6-1 and Tomczyk won all 12 games in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sahar Islam at sixth singles.

Marks took fourth singles 6-3, 6-2 over Tryanski, and Grebosky rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 victory against Jenna Sluymer.

Kutztown is in the midst of a five-match homestand, which continues next Tuesday, April 6, against Lock Haven at 3 p.m.
