KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's tennis team produced its second consecutive 7-0 victory, Tuesday, sweeping Lock Haven in a PSAC East match at the Keystone Courts.
The victory moved the Golden Bears to 2-2 overall and in conference play, while the Bald Eagles dropped their season opener.
Kutztown's third doubles pair of
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) and
Brianna Wendling (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) got the hosts off to a favorable start with a 6-1 win over Victoria Bensinger and McCartney Register. The Bears' No. 1 team of
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) followed suit with a 6-3 win and the No. 2 set of
Amanda Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and
Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) were 6-4 victors.
Singles was all KU, too, as the Maroon and Gold won all six flights in straight sets.
Grebosky was first to finish with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Delanie Wolever at No. 2, just ahead of Marks at No. 4, who produced matching scores in her victory over Saige Whipple.
Maher put down Natalie Brown at No. 3 by 6-2 scores in each set to put the match out of reach for the visitors.
Freshman
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) didn't drop a game in her triumph over Bensinger and Tomczyk was nearly flawless in a 6-1, 6-1 win against Jayna Brodnicki at sixth singles.
Lock Haven's Maddy Reeves challenged Makarski in the second set of their No. 1 singles meeting, sending it to a tiebreaker, but the Golden Bear sophomore prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Kutztown will step out of PSAC East play briefly when it wraps up a five-match homestand against NCAA Division III Albright, Friday at 3 p.m. The Golden Bears will conclude their weekend at Bloomsburg on Saturday.
