KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Shippensburg controlled possession and played relentless defense, Saturday, sending the Kutztown women's lacrosse team to a 12-5 PSAC East loss at Keystone Field.
Alana Cardaci had four goals, Hannah Seifried added three and Bailey Krahl totaled seven points (goal, six assists) for the visitors, who broke through for their first win of the season.
Kutztown (1-4, 1-3 PSAC East) was coming off its first win of the year last Tuesday against Millersville, but could not carry that momentum forward.
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) took a pass from
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and found a seam down the middle of the field to attack the cage and score 2:35 into the game for a 1-0 Golden Bear lead, but the Raiders (1-5, 1-4 PSAC East) scored nine of the next 11 goals for a 9-3 halftime lead.
Shippensburg won 10-of-12 draw controls and was aided by 10 KU turnovers in opening the six-goal gap. Cardaci scored all four of her goals before the break, including a back-breaker with just 0.3 left on the clock. Much of the Raider offense flowed through Krahl, who registered five first-half helpers.
After assisting on Conteh's opening goal, Fitzpatrick scored one of her own at the 10:31 mark.
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) finished off a pass from
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) for KU's final goal of the half with 6:19 remaining.
Though not in an ideal spot, the Golden Bears would try to flip their fortunes in the second half. Unfortunately, goals were at a premium over the final 30 minutes, with the teams combining for just five of them.
Kutztown twice made it a five-goal game, first on Fitzpatrick's second goal of the day with 22:07 left and again on a man-down marker by
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) with 16:59 to go.
Gabby Savarino restored Ship's six-goal lead, 11-5, with 11:33 left, but neither team found the back of the net over the next 10:45 until the Raiders concluded the scoring with a Seifried goal in the final minute.
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) made a season-high 12 saves while facing 28 shots from the Raiders.
Brooke-Lynn Grim (Abbottstown, Pa./New Oxford) had four ground balls and a caused turnover,
Sydnie Bisesi (Denton, Md./North Caroline) also had four ground balls and Conteh collected three ground balls and three draw controls.
Shippensburg doubled up the Bears in draws, 12-6, and committed four fewer turnovers (18-14). Seifried was the main culprit at the dot with a game-high six draw controls. Goalie KiKi Brasher stopped six shots.
Kutztown plays its third straight home game, Wednesday, when nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg visits for a 4 p.m. start.
