KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown's tough start to 2021 continued Thursday afternoon when visiting Millersville worked past the Golden Bear men's tennis team, 7-0, in its home opener at the Keystone Courts.
The Marauders' strength and depth gave KU issues throughout the match and Millersville (1-1, 1-0 PSAC) yielded just one set to sophomore
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) at second singles.
Millersville took the available doubles point with commanding performances at all three flights. Sophomores
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser) had the most success for Kutztown, winning three games against Ben Fellman and Ting-Yu Yen in a 6-3 defeat at No. 2.
Freshman
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and Arizpe claimed a pair of games in a 6-2 loss at No. 1.
In singles, Millersville put forth five straight set wins, including 6-0, 6-0 sweeps from Ben Fellman at No. 4 and Zach Pernia at No. 6.
Arizpe opened his match against Frank Yanni at No. 2 with a 7-5 victory in the first, but Yanni rolled 6-1, 6-1 in the remaining sets to keep KU off the board.
The Golden Bears are back at home to face West Chester this Saturday at 1 p.m.
