KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- If the Kutztown men's tennis team were to win its first match of the season, Saturday, it would need to do so in come-from-behind fashion.
That's exactly what the Golden Bears did, winning five of the six singles matches to top West Chester, 5-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match at the Keystone Courts.
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) scored a commanding 6-1 win over the Golden Rams' Andre Zequeira and Chris Succi at No. 1 doubles, but West Chester (0-2, 0-1 PSAC) returned the favor with a 6-1 at No. 2.
WCU stole the available point with a close 6-4 win at No. 3 from Christoph Baroudi and Brett Spano against
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) and
Logan Kemp (Hanover, Pa./South Western), forcing the Maroon and Gold (1-3, 1-3 PSAC) to play catch up.
Newcomer
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) got KU on the road back with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Cesar DeJesus-Morales at third singles, the first of three straight decisions for the hosts.
Arizpe held off Succi at second singles 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, while Barcelo rallied for a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Zequeira in the top flight match.
The Golden Rams closed the gap to 3-2 with a straight set win from Nicholas Balaci at No. 4, but Kutztown's
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Ethan Moyer (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) --former high school teammates at Conrad Weiser-- won fifth and sixth singles in straight sets to keep West Chester at bay.
Abell defeated Spano 6-3, 6-4 and Moyer downed Baroudi 6-3, 7-5.
Kutztown's five singles and one doubles wins were its first of the year after suffering 7-0 defeats to some of the conference's top teams in Mercyhurst, Edinboro and Millersville over the last week.
The Golden Bears will not face Saint Thomas Aquinas on the road Tuesday as originally scheduled. That match has been moved to April 20. Instead, they'll have a nearly two-week layoff with the Easter holiday approaching and return at home against Albright on Friday, April 9.
