EDINBORO, Pa. -- Kutztown men's tennis could not find a way to topple another of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's best teams, Sunday, as it fell to 0-2 on the young season with a 7-0 defeat at Edinboro.
A day after going up against Mercyhurst, the three-time defending conference champions, the Golden Bears got a date with the Fighting Scots (3-3, 2-0 PSAC), who were runners-up in each of those title matches.
Kutztown (0-2, 0-2 PSAC) had moderate success in doubles, where they won three games at the first and third flights, despite not being able to steal a match off the hosts. Freshman
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and sophomore
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) teamed up for the Maroon and Gold at No. 1, while freshman
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) and junior
Logan Kemp (Hanover, Pa./South Western) were at No. 3
Barcelo had the best showing in singles, claiming six games in a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Takahiro Inoue at No. 1. Arizpe won two games in his second set against Ruben Acuna at No. 2 (6-0, 6-2) and
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser) did the same against Kaio Sacchi at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2).
Sophomore
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) also took two games in his third singles match with Thibault Dorval before falling 6-1, 6-1.
Kutztown will look for better fortune on its home courts this Thursday when Millersville visits for a 2 p.m. start.
