HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- The 16th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team is heading into Winter Break on a high after nationally-ranked heavyweight
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and 133-pounder
Collin Wickramaratna (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) won their weight classes and nine Golden Bears placed in total at Sunday's Bob Quade Cyclone Open hosted by Centenary University.
Dunn Jr., the 2019 NCAA Division II national champion and two-time All-American, finally got to make his season debut after nearly a month of waiting. He was set to wrestle in last Wednesday's dual against Seton Hill, but took a victory by forfeit in that one. No one in the field had anything for the graduate student from Bethlehem, who struck for a pin in his opening round match, a technical fall in the quarterfinals and then a pair of decisions to claim the heavyweight title and surpass 50 career wins in Maroon and Gold (51-2).
Dunn Jr. has never lost to a non-Division I opponent, entering his third season with the Bears and that continued Sunday. He even added another victory over a DI opponent, using three takedowns to defeat Army's Kade Carlson in the semifinals, 8-2. In his championship bout, Dunn Jr. used a reversal from the bottom and takedown to open up a 4-1 lead after two periods against Centenary's Kevin Mulligan. Another takedown in the third helped DII's top-ranked heavyweight to a 7-2 decision.
After placing second at the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Open two weeks ago, Wickramaratna did one better at Centenary defending his 2019 title at the Cyclone Open. Ranked seventh in the most recent NWCA poll at 133, Wickramaratna pinned Union's Cory Boss in 6:21 in the first round and picked up a 12-2 major decision over Hunter's Andrew Cota to reach the final four of his bracket.
A pair of Army Prep grapplers stood in the New Jersey native's way, but Wickramaratna handled Nain Vazquez, 11-6, in the semifinals and held off Raymond Lopez in an entertaining championship match. Lopez trailed 4-2 after an early third-period escape, but got a takedown to tie the score with 1:35 to go. Wickramaratna, a 2019-20 All-American, escaped 30 seconds later to regain the lead, 5-4, and held on from there.
Outside of its two champions, Kutztown had a big day with six additional placewinners.
Matt Wilde (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) was second at 125,
Nathaniel Fossett (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) the runner-up at 174 and
James Potts (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) a finalist at 197.
James Holder (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) took third at 184, as did
Brian Kennerly (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) at 197, while 157-pounder
Sean Smith (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and heavyweight
Dustin Swanson (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot), each of whom were wrestling unattached, placed fourth.
Fossett came into the Cyclone Open looking for his first collegiate win and had his best go as a Golden Bear in this young season. Capitalizing on a first round bye, the sophomore from Annandale, N.J., pinned UMBC's Vincent Aurigemma in the first period of their quarterfinal match and cruised by Centenary's Haakon Mathewson by major decision, 16-6, in the semis. An 8-0 defeat to Dominic Falcone from DI Army ended Fossett's day in the title bout.
Wilde, who carried an unbeaten 6-0 record into Sunday's action, nearly won his second tournament of the fall. He got by Middlesex CC's Zain Ahmad in the second round with a 20-5 technical fall at 6:38 and gained back-to-back decisions in the quarters and semis to clinch his spot in the finals. Wilde was tied with Army Prep's Ethan Berginc into the third period, but Berginc got the decisive takedown in the final minute to pull out a 3-1 win.
Potts won three straight matches to reach the finals at 197, including a pin of teammate
Nasir Dreuitt (Bear, Del./William Penn) in the quarterfinals and a decision over Keevon Berry of Centenary in the semifinals. His only loss came by an 8-4 count in the finals to Wyoming Seminary's Kolby Franklin, one of the top prep wrestlers and DI recruits in the country who is headed to the University of Iowa.
Kennerly racked up a team-high six wins on the day, capturing a pin and major decision in the championship bracket to reach the quarterfinals, before totaling four additional wins in the consolation bracket. He doubled up Army's Tom Godbee, 12-6, in the third-place match.
It was a tough road for Holder, who fell in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, but battled back to win four in a row in the consolation bracket and capture third by avenging his quarterfinal loss to Centenary's Justin Hopman with a 15-4 major decision in the third-place match. The freshman was dominant in all of his victories, with two pins, two major decisions and a technical fall.
Smith and Swanson's tournaments followed a similar directory as each won his first two bouts to advance to the semifinals, before falling in those semis and the subsequent third-place matches. Smith earned a 2:21 pin of Montclair State's Frankie Lopez in his first match of the day at 157, while Swanson pinned Lackawanna's Jayden Riley in the quarterfinals at 285.
Kutztown will return to the mat in 2022 when it hosts the KU Duals at O'Pake Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 8.
