Derr scores season-high 23 points, Golden Bears downed by No. 10 IUP

KUTZTOWN, Pa.- Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Kutztown University women's basketball team had a slow third quarter, getting outscored 25-10 as KU was defeated by No. 10 Indiana University (Pa) in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears' (6-3 overall, 0-1 PSAC) five-game win streak was snapped, and the Crimson Hawks (7-0, 1-0) kept their undefeated run in tact.

In the first quarter everything seemed to be going Kutztown's way, out scoring IUP 17-6 to start the game. Senior guard Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) led the Maroon and Gold offense, scoring 10 of her season-high 23 points in the first quarter alone.

The Crimson Hawks started to play better in the start of the second quarter, almost erasing Kutztown's 11 point lead. At half time, the Golden Bears led by only one point, 30-29, as they went into the break.

Coming out of halftime the momentum had completely shifted, the Golden Bears could only score 10 points, shooting 27% in the quarter. The Crimson Hawks on the other hand were much more efficient making over 50% of their attempts in the corner. IUP benefited from redshirt-senior Courtney Alexander's impressive offensive performance. The guard scored a game-high 28 points, making eight shots from beyond the arc.

Kutztown went into the fourth quarter trailing by 14. KU would do its best to overcome the deficit, but the IUP offense would not let up and only to add to its lead throughout the final quarter.

The Golden Bears look to bounce back tomorrow, Dec. 4th, as they continue in conference competition against Seton Hill in Keystone Arena at 5:30 p.m.
