KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- In an already accomplished career, Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) has produced her share of high-scoring games.
Only one has topped Saturday night's, however, when the senior poured in 31 points --one off her career-high-- and pulled down 11 boards for a double-double to help Kutztown take control in the second half and earn their first PSAC win of the season, 59-48, over Seton Hill at Keystone Arena.
Coming off a tough game 24 hours earlier against nationally-ranked IUP, the Golden Bears (7-3, 1-1 PSAC) got off to a slow start, making just 3-of-11 shots and trailing 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Kutztown's offense started to come alive, scoring 17 points and shooting 50% from the field. Derr accounted for 11 of those, knocking down three of her game-high six 3-pointers as the Bears trimmed the Griffins' (6-4, 1-1 PSAC) lead to 28-26 at the half.
Derr kept cooking with 10 more points in the third, giving her 25 heading into the final period. The Golden Bears' defense followed suit, limiting Seton Hill to just 20 second half points and 6-of-33 shooting (18.1%) over the third and fourth quarters.
Kutztown broke a 38-all tie and went in front for good on Derr's triple from the left corner with 1:21 left in the third quarter.
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) followed with a nifty finish on the Bears' next possession to put KU up 43-38 after three.
The Maroon and Gold's lead grew to seven early in the fourth, though the Griffins answered with a quick 6-0 run to draw back within one, 45-44, with 7:44 to play. They would not get over the hump, though. Remolde hit a jumper and Derr canned another three to push the lead back to six nearing the midway point of the quarter.
Derr registered a season-high in points for the second consecutive game after a 23-point performance against IUP Friday. Her career-high of 32 came back in January, 2019, against East Stroudsburg.
Kutztown's defense was a force to be reckoned with in the paint. The Golden Bears blocked 11 shots, Remolde and Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) leading those efforts with four and three denials, respectively. Remolde also had 11 points and eight boards. Pierson and
Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) each totaled seven rebounds.
Cheyenne Trest was the only Griffin in double figures with 11 points, as KU limited Seton Hill to 23.5% shooting (16-of-68).
After five straight home games at Keystone Arena, the Bears get ready to embark on four in a row away from home that will roll into the new year. The first of those is a non-conference contest at Chestnut Hill Wednesday evening at 6.
