KU volleyball honors seniors, falls 3-0 to West Chester in regular season home finale

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team took to the court Saturday afternoon for its final home game of the regular season at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears were hoping to win back-to-back games for just the second time this season after coming off a 3-1 win over Millersville Friday night. KU battled hard but was unable to get the win, as it fell in straight sets to West Chester University (28-26, 25-13, 25-18) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.

Prior to the game, Kutztown held a celebration to honor its four graduating seniors, Gianna Agosti (Nesquehoning, Pa./Marian Catholic), Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley), Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), and Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove). Each have been valuable members of the team throughout their careers at KU.

This season, Agosti sits second with 23 service aces and fifth on the team with 184 digs, while Patterson leads the team in kills with 219. Charlton has only played in five games this season due to injury but did play in 28 of 29 games in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. She ranked 12th in the PSAC with 0.86 blocks per set in 2019. Wilson leads the team this year with 503 digs and ranks second in KU volleyball history with 1,772 digs in her career.

The Golden Rams (21-6 overall, 9-3 PSAC East) came out strong in the first set, jumping out to a quick 8-3 lead. They continued to carry the lead late in the set, leading 20-14, before the Golden Bears went on an 8-1 run to take the 22-21 lead. Kutztown (8-17, 3-9) would save a set point and have two of its own, but was unable to capitalize as West Chester ended up taking the first set 28-26.

In the second set, it was the Golden Rams who went out to an early lead and never looked back, taking the set 25-13. In the third, West Chester were up big, leading 17-10 at one point, before KU won five straight points thanks to three kills from Agosti and one from Maddy Moore. Unfortunately, that would be as close as Kutztown would get in the set, as West Chester closed out the game on an 8-3 run.

Patterson led the Golden Bears attack with nine kills, followed by seven from Sophia Basler (Dover, Del./Smyrna), and four by Julia Post (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge). Post also had four blocks, while Charlton contributed two blocks of her own. Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) tallied 20 assists and Wilson recorded 21 digs to go along with four assists.

Kutztown heads into the final week of the regular season with a pair of road games. They'll look to finish the season on a high note beginning Friday night at Lock Haven. First serve is at 7 p.m.
