KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Four scored in double figures and the Kutztown University women's basketball team used a 20-6 second quarter spurt to defeat Holy Family University 79-61 Wednesday afternoon in a pre-Thanksgiving, non-conference game at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (6-2 overall) won their fifth game in-a-row and are undefeated (5-0) in games played in Pennsylvania.
Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) led KU with 14 points, tying a season-high with her second straight game with 14. The senior added three rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) recorded her first double-double this season, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) netted a season-high 11 points and
Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) rounded out the Golden Bears scoring double-digits with 10.
Kutztown shot 50.8% (32-for-63) from the floor, compared to 33.3% (21-for-63) for the Tigers (4-2). Holy Family, however, made twice as many three-pointers (12) as did KU (6).
Following a layup by
Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) to open the game 0:13 in, the Tigers drained a three-pointer to take a 3-2 lead at the 9:27 mark, that would be the only lead they would hold. Smith connected from distance 0:23 later to go up 5-3 and took as big as a nine-point lead (17-8) in the opening quarter. Kutztown then took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring Holy Family 20-6 to go up by 19 points, which it took into halftime, leading 41-22. The Tigers pulled to within 15 (54-39) with 3:52 to go in the third quarter, but would not get any closer the rest of the way.
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) had nine points,
Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) totaled eight points and four assists,
Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) contributed seven points, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks, and Pierson finished with six points and six rebounds.
Presley Berryhill (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) rounded out the KU scoring with two points.
Kutztown has over a week off before its next game when it hosts nationally-ranked Indiana (Pa.) next Friday, Dec. 3, at 5:30 p.m., from Keystone Arena.
