KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Third-ranked Kutztown won its fifth straight game in dominant fashion, defeating Mansfield 5-1 on Senior Day at Keystone Field Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Golden Bears honored their eight seniors: Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), Brittany Arentz (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern), Alisea Munshower (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York), Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East), Destiny Wiatr (Runnemede, N.J./Triton Regional), Gennyka Liebenthal (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township), Molly McHarg (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) and Savanna Harrison (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge). These eight were a part of nearly 40 KU victories, along with participating in both the PSAC and NCAA Championship tournaments.
With the win, Kutztown now has 39 points (13-1) in PSAC East play and continues to hold its place atop the division table, leading second place West Chester by five points.
Argen opened the scoring late in the first half for the Golden Bears, recording her 10th goal of the season on a free kick that she powered into the back of the net from long distance. She now holds sole possession of second place in goals and points in the PSAC. Although Kutztown (15-1 overall) outshot Mansfield 9-0 in the first half, the game remained close as the Maroon and Gold carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, it was all Kutztown from the start. Caroline Wood (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) scored her second of the season in the 51st minute to double KU's lead. The Bears would not stop there, adding goals in the 67th and 69th minute by Kylee MacLeod (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Melissa Ulrich (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) to take a 4-0 advantage.
As time wound down, Mansfield broke through on a Bailey Dockman goal with 12 minutes left to deny the Bears the clean sheet.
The scoring wasn't done, however, as Rebekah March (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) scored her second goal in as many games in the 87th minute. March's second of the season put KU up 5-1 and marked a new season-high for goals in a game.
Kutztown heads into the final week of the regular season with a pair of road games. They'll look for a strong finish beginning Wednesday night in Lock Haven. Game time is at 6 p.m.
