It was Saturday, October 9th, and the Golden Bears boarded an early bus, destined for Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and a clash with conference foe, Notre Dame College. The Falcons are located in Euclid, Ohio but due to field issues on their campus, they arranged to host Kutztown at the renowned Founders Field, home of the Pittsburgh Harlequins RFC. Notre Dame College is always a very respectable opponent and the two clubs have a history of challenging one another in the Rugby East. This game was no exception, when Kutztown took the opening kickoff and immediately drove downfield.
The Golden Bear backline was running on all cylinders and ate up large chunks of yardage. When they found themselves fifteen yards from the try line,
Thorne O'Connell (Johannesburg, South Africa/Jeppe) raced toward the Falcon try zone, only to give an outside pass to winger
Aaron Gray (Washington, D.C./Perry Street Prep). Gray went into the promise land and dotted down near the posts. O'Connell converted and the Golden Bears where on the board at the two minute mark. KU 7 NDC 0. In the ensuing minutes, Notre Dame College countered with a well planned attack but where held at bay by the Kutztown defense. However, they did emerge from the Kutztown Red Zone with a penalty kick and were on the board at seven minutes, KU 7 NDC 3. Both teams threatened during the next eleven minutes when it was the combination of O'Connell and Gray that found the magic once again. O'Connell charged toward the Falcon try line from ten yards out. When the defenders converged on him, he released a "No Look", pop pass to Gray, who streaked into the try zone unscathed. O'Connell followed with the conversion and the scoreboard read, KU 14 NDC 3. Kutztown got penalized at the twenty five minute mark and the Falcons took advantage by slotting another penalty kick, to bring the score to, KU 14 NDC 6. Within minutes, the Falcons converged on a downfield kick to win the ball back and find room down the sideline for their first try of the day. The corner conversion missed but they had managed to pull themselves back into the game at the thirty one minute mark. KU 14 NDC 11. Then with three minutes left in the first half and Kutztown knocking on the door, O'Connell opted for the sure three points and struck a penalty kick to end the first stanza with Kutztown holding onto a slim lead, KU 17 NDC 11.
The second half began with both teams attacking and counter attacking for field position as both sides probed for an opening. Kutztown garnered a line out at the Falcon fifteen yard line when the Golden Bears formed a maul and drove the opposition into their own try zone.
Logan Bachman (Kutztown, Pa./Central Catholic) dropped onto the corner of the try zone for Kutztown's third try at the fifty minute mark. The conversion was wide and Kutztown lead, KU 22 NDC 11.
It was only three minutes later when Notre Dame's backline was working the ball wide at mid-field. However, they were dangerously unaware of a lurking defender in maroon and gold. Gray timed it perfectly and his lightening intrusion into their backline, resulted in an interception that saw him halfway to the try line, before the Falcons realized what had just happened. O'Connell converted in front of the posts and it was KU 29 NDC 11. To their credit, Notre Dame never relented and found their way into the Golden Bear try zone at fifty seven minutes but missed their conversion, KU 29 NDC 16. Once again both sides tested one another with fast and furious rugby. Then the clock struck sixty seven minutes when Bachman broke numerous tackles to batter and bruise the Falcon defense, in what became a spectacular fifty yard effort as he scored in the corner of the try zone. The unsuccessful corner conversion was attempted by Mate Kvirikashvili, KU 34 NDC 16. With the game winding down and at the seventy two minute mark, the Kutztown defense was blitzing the Notre Dame backline. As they charged forward, the Falcon fly half wisely chipped the ball through the onrush to gather it in and along with his outside backs, raced in for yet another Notre Dame score and conversion, KU 34 NDC 23. The Golden Bears fought to win back the game's momentum and with one minute left in the contest, swung the ball wide to find
Brock Stinson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Coronado) in position to carry the rock in for the final score and conversion by
P.J. O'Reilly (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara). The final tally was KU 41 NDC 23.
The Kutztown Second Side has been playing outstanding rugby and remains undefeated with a well earned victory over Notre Dame College, 17- 5. Trys were scored by
Helmut Baschleben (Maui, Hawaii),
Blake Andrews (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) and
Michael Greene (Harlem, N.Y.). One of three conversions by
Timothy Piper (San Jose, Calif.) were true to form.
