FROSTBURG, Md. -- Seventh-ranked Kutztown field hockey bookended head coach
Marci Scheuing's 100th career collegiate victory with goals in the first and fourth quarters to blank host Frostburg State, 2-0, Friday night.
Since taking over from the legendary Betty Wessner in 2013, Scheuing has put her stamp on the program by leading the Golden Bears to five consecutive double-digit win seasons (2015-19), three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament appearances and a trip to the 2019 NCAA Division II national semifinals.
Scheuing cut her teeth in the profession with rebuilding projects at Cedar Crest and Bryn Mawr, both stops serving as valuable lessons in patience, persistence and hard work. She left each program in a better state than she inherited.
A standout player at Mansfield, Scheuing has thrived during her time in the PSAC. Now in her eighth season, she's guided the Golden Bears to 85 wins (85-54) and cemented the program's reputation as an upper-echelon team in Division II's preeminent field hockey conference.
Hundreds of players have grown --on and off the field-- under Scheuing's leadership and contributed to the victories leading up to Friday's milestone.
On this night,
Breann Craley (York, Pa./Central York) and
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) had the honors of notching the goals, while
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) picked up a one-save shutout in a game controlled by the Maroon and Gold (7-1) from start-to-finish.
Craley put Kutztown ahead with just over a minute left in the first quarter. The junior from York carried in from 35 yards out, spinning out of a 1-on-1 situation with a Bobcat defender and firing a backhanded bullet past FSU (1-8) goalie Madison Manalansan.
Despite constant pressure from the Bears, Frostburg State clogged up the interior and managed to keep the score at 1-0 into the late stages of the game. Manalansan stood tall with 11 saves, Emily Hughes and Ava Waddell had defensive saves and 11 KU shots went down as blocked.
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional), Kutztown's leading goal scorer on the season, nearly added her 11th in the early stages of the third quarter ringing a shot off the right post following a corner.
While Frostburg did a commendable job keeping the ball out of the cage, Kutztown's control of possession kept the Bobcats from threatening offensively. The Golden Bears outshot FSU 34-1 and held a 22-4 advantage in corners.
Inevitably, the Golden Bears broke through again when Dusman collected her own rebound and flipped it into the upper right corner of the net with 1:35 to play.
Following Friday's game, Kutztown holds a whopping 218-47 shot advantage over its opponents for the season. In three of their eight games, the Golden Bears have held their opponent to one shot or fewer. Only one opponent has registered more than 10 shots.
Kutztown will stay in Frostburg to face Lindenwood Saturday at 5 p.m.
