Historic season lands Clements second KU Dr. Dennis Roth Men's Coach of the Year award

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Under the direction of head coach Jim Clements, Kutztown University football's profile has risen over the last six seasons. The caliber of program Clements has built, backed by a historic 2019 season, made him a runaway choice for the 2019-20 KU Dr. Dennis Roth Men's Coach of the Year Award, as voted upon by his colleagues. It's the second time Clements has earned the award, first receiving the honor following the 2016-17 academic year.

No other Kutztown football team won more games than the 2019 squad, as the Golden Bears matched a program single-season record with 11 wins. KU also won its fourth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division championship --and first since 2016-- while going a perfect 7-0 in divisional play for just the second time in program history. Clements-coached teams have accounted for half of the program's division titles all-time. He's compiled a 48-20 career record at KU, which includes consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II Championship tournament in 2018 and 2019.

The Golden Bears experienced plenty of team and individual success along the way, setting program single-season records with 14 All-PSAC East selections and nine Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 honorees.

Clements, who earned PSAC and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Regional Coach of the Year honors this past season, owns the highest win percentage of any head coach in program history (.706) and has a 34-9 record in PSAC games (.791). He's already ascended to second among Kuztown's all-time winningest coaches and is just 13 wins shy of tying George Baldwin's program record 61. The Golden Bears have increased their win totals in each of the last three seasons and Clements has never had a losing season in 14 campaigns between head coaching stints at Delaware Valley University and KU.

Kutztown achieved its first ever 10-0 start in 2019 and climbed as high as No. 13 in the AFCA Division II Poll and No. 15 in the D2Football.com Poll. Clements' team led the PSAC and ranked fourth nationally with 32 turnovers gained, while also leading the conference with 13 fumble recoveries, team passing efficiency defense (104.75) and kickoff returns (24.59 yards per return). KU's offense hummed along all season, averaging 35.5 points and 449.0 yards per game --both fourth best in the PSAC. The defense did its job, too, allowing just 18.8 points per game, the fewest given up by a Golden Bear team since 2001 (16.3).
