HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Sophomore
Bobby Frankenfield (Telford, Pa./Souderton) picked up his first career singles victory, Sunday, but the Kutztown University men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Salem to start their Spring Break trip.
Frankenfield held off the Tigers' Bas de Waal, 8-6, in an eight-game pro set at sixth singles to record his first collegiate win and help the Golden Bears (1-2) avoid a shutout.
Unbeaten Salem (4-0) took control early, securing the available point in doubles by claiming all three matches. The No. 2 pair of Emanuel Mallya and Jose Marino won by a 6-0 count, while Nos. 1 Gianfranco Germinara and Anas Haddou and Nos. 3 Zachary LaPlante and de Waal were each 6-2 victors.
In singles play, No. 1 Germinara, No. 4 LaPlante and No. 2 Mallya won in straight sets to clinch the win for the Tigers. Haddou also claimed a straight set win at No. 3, before flights five and six were abbreviated.
Freshman
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) took three games off Mallya in a 6-1, 6-2 loss at second singles, while
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Benjamin Kelly (Medina, Ohio/Highland) each won a pair of games in their matches at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
Kutztown is set for an early 8:30 a.m. start on Monday against Michigan Tech at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort.
