KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team has won two of its first three games, including the last two, to open up the 2020 season. KU looks to keep the momentum rolling when it travels to Florida for two games during spring break, beginning tomorrow, Saturday, March 7.
The Golden Bears (2-1 overall) play at Florida Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a game at Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, March 10, at 4 p.m.
In its current two-game win streak, Kutztown has scored 36 goals, including 22 in a victory over Caldwell on Feb. 26, the most goals scored by the program in a game since it scored 27 on March 20, 2010. KU is tied for second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with 16.33 goals per game, second in points per game (26.0) and leads the PSAC with 9.67 assists per game, while totaling 36.33 shots per game (third in the PSAC).
The Maroon and Gold offense has shown a great balance so far through their first three games. Nine different players have recorded four goals or more, led by freshman
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) with eight.
Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) and
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) both have seven,
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) has six and
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) netted five. Each of
Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur),
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North),
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and
Hannah Brewster (Denton, Md./North Caroline) have tallied four goals. Vaughan Ware leads the conference with eight assists, while Cafferata is tied for second with six and Hurd is tied for fourth with five.
Peyton Shima (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) has contributed two assists thus far.
Defensively, freshman goalie
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) has stepped up in her first season of collegiate action and led Kutztown to a 2-1 start. Blesson ranks fourth in the PSAC in saves per game with 10.00.
The Panthers enter the game Saturday with a 5-1 overall record, winning their first five games of the season. The Eagles are 3-2 overall and take on Lander University today, Friday, March 6, before hosting Kutztown next Tuesday.
