GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Seton Hill won five consecutive bouts and got a match-clinching pin at 197 pounds in sending the 17th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team to a 21-16 PSAC defeat Saturday night in Greensburg.
Things got off to a great start for the Golden Bears as
Joe Renne (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) won by major decision, 16-4, over Frank Bonura at 125 and
Collin Wickramaratna (Malton, N.J./Cherokee) secured his team-leading sixth pin of the season at 4:41 against Vincent DiStefanis in the 133-pound matchup for a 10-0 KU lead.
The host Griffins (7-5, 4-2 PSAC) won the next five weight classes, though many of the matches could have gone either way and a lack of bonus points kept the Maroon and Gold in it. Nationally-ranked No. 11 Austin Shaw held off
Michael Cusick (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) in overtime, 7-6, at 149, while
AJ Bencivenga (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) (3-2 decision at 157),
Connor Rogovich (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) (3-0 decision at 165) and
Anthony Emig (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) (10-8 decision at 174) dropped their matches by a combined six points.
Kutztown (8-4, 2-3) drew within 15-13 on
James Potts' (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) 11-9 overtime victory against William Romjue at 184, but nationally-ranked No. 12 Billy Bowlen's first-period pin of
Robert Spezza (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) at 197 secured the match for Seton Hill.
The final bout of the night was a classic, however, as top-ranked
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) kept his unbeaten season alive with a 2-1 win in a tiebreaker against ninth-ranked Jake Beistel. Dunn improved to 41-0 against DII competition since joining the Golden Bears for the 2018-19 season.
Kutztown returns to Keystone Arena for the final time this season when it hosts Shippensburg on Senior Night, Wednesday, at 7 p.m.
