KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep),
Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) and
Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading), the 'killer B's,' proved that metaphor once again as the trio helped push a second-half comeback to take down Millersville University 72-68 Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (10-11 overall, 8-7 PSAC) have now won two straight games and four-in-a-row at home, improving their record to 7-3 at Keystone Arena this season. The win moves KU to within just a half-game of second place in the division, with West Chester, Millersville and East Stroudsburg all sporting 9-7 PSAC records following Wednesday's games.
Bernstein, Brake and Butler combined to score 57 of Kutztown's 72 points (79-percent), and came up clutch in the final 20-minute period. Butler led the way with a team-high 22 points, his third consecutive game scoring 20-plus points and fifth in his last six overall. Brake finished with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor and was sidelined for much of the opening of the second half because of four trouble. Bernstein recorded 16 points, six assists and tied a season-high with two steals.
The Maroon and Gold outscored the Marauders (12-10, 9-7) 44-30 in the second half, mostly by their hot shooting. Kutztown shot 58.6-percent (17-for-29) and connected on eight 3-pointers to climb back from a double-digit halftime deficit, trailing 38-28 heading into the locker rooms.
Millersville opened the second half with a 3-pointer to take its largest lead of the game, 41-28, just 0:37 into the frame. KU went on a 12-4 run the next 4:12 to trail by just five (45-40) with 15:11 remaining. After a back-and-forth next couple of minutes, Kutztown took its first lead of the game since the 13:02 mark of the first half on a layup by
Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) that put KU ahead 52-51 with 10:06 to go.
Down 61-60 with 4:55 left, Brake and Bernstein hit back-to-back three's on two straight possessions and Kutztown never trailed the rest of the way.
Griffin tallied eight points and career-highs of six rebounds and two steals in making his second straight start.
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) contributed three points, four rebounds and three assists, and both
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and
Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) had two points. The duo also combined for nine rebounds, with Townsend bringing in five and Mosby grabbing four.
Kutztown will play its next two games on the road, beginning with a road tilt at Lock Haven University this Saturday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m.
