Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by C.J. Hemerly, Assistant Sports Information Director

Strong fourth quarter gives Kutztown a 61-47 victory at Mansfield Saturday

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The flashbacks from last season started happening, but the Kutztown University women's basketball team would not have it this time around. KU dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Mansfield University 18-3, and fought back from a fourth-quarter deficit to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game 61-47 Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

The Golden Bears (17-9 overall, 14-6 PSAC) have now won three straight games and are now in a tie with East Stroudsburg (18-8, 14-6) for second place in the East Division standings.

Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) finished with her third double-double of the year, and third in the last five games, leading all scorers with 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) did a little bit of it all, tallying 15 points, eight rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block. Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) recorded nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

It was a slower first half for Kutztown, as it went into the locker room at halftime tied with the Mounties (3-24, 1-20) 28-28. It may have brought back bad memories of KU's last trip to Decker Gymnasium, a 46-40 defeat back on Jan. 16, 2019. KU turned the ball over 11 times over the first two quarters, but took better care of the ball the last two frames, committing just four turnovers.

The Maroon and Gold found themselves trailing 44-43 after three quarters of play, and then fell behind 46-43, 0:20 in following a Mansfield basket. But over the next 7:57, Kutztown went on a 16-0 run to take control of the game and leave Mansfield with an important road conference victory. The KU defense did not allow a Mounties field goal for the final 9:40 of the contest.

Derr had 17 of her 22 points in the second half, while Remolde netted 13 of her 15 throughout the first half.

Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished with six points and Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) added four for KU. Both Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) and Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed two points, with Pierson chipping in three rebounds, two assists and tying a career-high with three blocks. Sam Mikos (Freehold, N.J./Saint Rose) had one point and one rebound.

Kutztown will remain on the road for its final regular season contest away from home as it takes on Bloomsburg on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 5:30 p.m.
