BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team saw a three-game win streak come to an end on the road as KU fell to Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division action Wednesday night at Nelson Field House.
The Golden Bears (17-10 overall, 14-7 PSAC) had two players finish in double-digits in scoring, led by freshman
Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) with 13 points and four rebounds. Junior
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Kutztown had trouble putting the ball in the basket as the Huskies (13-13, 10-12) played stout defensively, holding the KU offense to a season-low in points and its second-lowest field-goal percentage, finishing 17-for-55 (30.9%) from the floor. Kutztown also tied a season-low with three 3-pointers on 21 attempts.
In a low-scoring first quarter, Bloomsburg finished on a 5-0 run to lead 10-7 after KU held a 7-5 advantage. The Huskies were able to add some cushion to their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Maroon and Gold 25-14 over that 10-minute frame and went into the locker rooms in front 35-21 at halftime.
KU was able to cut its deficit back to single-digits with a 5-0 spurt in a 1:01 span to trail just 39-31 with 4:53 left in the quarter. Kutztown was down 46-37 after three. The Golden Bears were able to get to within seven points, three separate times in the fourth quarter, but that was the closest that they would get the rest of the way.
Juniors
Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and
Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) each finished with seven points. Zerman added five rebounds and two steals, while Smith contributed four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman
Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) recorded six points and six rebounds.
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallied three points, three rebounds and a block, and both
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and
Presley Berryhill (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) netted two points to round out the scoring for KU.
Kutztown remains tied with East Stroudsburg (18-9, 14-7) in the division standings. ESU holds the tiebreaker for the second seed in next week's tournament, which includes a bye in the first round. Whichever team settles for the third seed will host a first round game.
Kutztown hosts the current first place team in the East Division, Shippensburg, in the regular season finale this Saturday, Feb. 29, at 1 p.m., on senior day inside Keystone Arena.
