KU Women’s Basketball uses strong third quarter push to defeat Bloomsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team used a strong third quarter to comeback and take down Bloomsburg University 66-55 Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game at Keystone Arena in a matchup of last season's top-two teams from the division.

It was a much-needed victory for the Golden Bears (12-8 overall, 9-5 PSAC), who had previously dropped their last two contests.

Eight different Kutztown players scored, including four in double-figures. Junior Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) led the way with 15 points and also added eight rebounds. Classmate Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) tallied a season-high 13 points and five boards. Senior Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) recorded 12 points and four rebounds, and went 5-for-6 from the floor, and freshman Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) contributed 10 points and four rebounds.

The Maroon and Gold outscored the Huskies (8-10, 5-9) 23-9 in the third quarter to erase a four-point halftime deficit (28-24). Bloomsburg went ahead by as much as seven points (33-26) within the first 2:04 of the third quarter, but Kutztown answered in a big way, finishing the quarter on a 21-4 run to lead 47-37 heading to the fourth quarter.

Bloomsburg cut its double-digit deficit to just two points (47-45) with 7:35 remaining by scoring the first eight points of the frame. But that would be the closest it would get the rest of the way as KU netted six straight and never led by less than four the rest of the way.

Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) had eight points, three rebounds and three assists. Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) netted four points, and both Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) added two points for KU.

Kutztown has a week off before its next game, next Wednesday, Feb. 5, when it hosts Millersville at 5:30 p.m. from Keystone Arena.
