KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team outscored Millersville University by 10 points in the second quarter to climb back from a first-quarter hole and win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game 69-63 Wednesday night inside Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (13-8 overall, 10-5 PSAC) completed the two-game sweep of the Marauders (7-14, 4-12). It's the first sweep for KU in over 20 years in the series.
Kutztown distributed its scoring around the roster Wednesday as 10-of-11 players that saw action, etched their names into the scorebook. KU was led by 20 points from junior
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), her highest total since she had 24 in a win over Lock Haven back on Jan. 6. She also connected on five 3-pointers.
Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) and
Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) also reached double-figures, recording 13 points each, which was a season-high for Smith, playing in just her third game of the year back from injury. Zerman also had a career-high six steals to pace KU's 13 total, and added five assists and eight rebounds, both were team-highs.
Derr hit from long range in the Maroon and Gold's opening possession, but fell behind for the majority of the quarter and trailed 19-15 after the opening frame. But Kutztown made its comeback in the second.
With the score tied 28-28 and 4:18 left on the clock, KU went on an 8-2 run the rest of the way to take a 36-30 advantage into halftime.
The Golden Bears spiked their lead to as many as 12 points (42-30) 1:50 into the third quarter, but the Marauders fought back to tie the score at 48-all, and KU led 52-49 after three. In a back-and-forth fourth quarter, Kutztown reached a double-digit lead at 65-55 with just 0:51 left, and held on for its second straight PSAC victory.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) finished with seven points, two rebounds and two assists.
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallied five points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) contributed three points and three rebounds, and the quartet of
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional),
Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood),
Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and
Sam Mikos (Freehold, N.J./Saint Rose) all had two points for KU.
Mia Leonard paced Millersville with a game-high 26 points to lead a trio of three in double-figures. Her, Lauren Lister and Courtney Dimoff scored all but 10 of their team's points.
Kutztown will hit the road for its next two games, beginning with a game at Lock Haven University this Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m.
