Wozniak’s hat-trick propels No. 7 field hockey to 6-0 win over S. Connecticut State

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) of the Kutztown University field hockey team recorded a hat-trick and three other KU players found the back of the cage as Kutztown bounced back from a season-opening defeat to win 6-0 over Southern Connecticut State out of the North East-10, Saturday afternoon in its first game of the Saint Michael's Tournament in Colchester, Vermont.

It was the highest scoring total for the Golden Bears (1-1 overall) since they tallied eight goals in their opener back on Sept. 2, 2017.

"Today was a total team effort," said head coach Marci Scheuing. "We got every player in the game and we truly played like a team. Our passing game was fantastic."

Wozniak, who was second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in goals last season, broke out in big way after being shutout on Thursday. She now has 40 goals in her career and sits alone in seventh all-time in program history. Wozniak is also pacing the conference in both goals (3) and points (7) after two games.

Classmate Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), sophomore defender Juliana Borisow (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and freshman Breann Craley (York, Pa./Central York) also contributed goals for Kutztown. It was the first career goal for both Borisow and Craley, the latter also earning an assist on Wozniak's second goal.

Senior captain Molly Bobjak (New Castle, Del./Padua Academy) had two assists and currently leads the PSAC in the category. Junior defender Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) also picked up an assist for KU.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kutztown really picked it up offensively, netting four of its six goals in an 11:43 span in the second quarter. Wozniak put back the first of two goals in the quarter on a rebound, then Craley shot into the bottom left corner of the cage after she took a pass into the middle of the box by Bobjak. Fuhrman's goal came off a penalty corner pass by Roselli, and then was followed by Wozniak's second on a pass from Craley with 0:48 left in the half.

The Maroon and Gold held a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime, and added on with tallies by Borisow and Wozniak less than two minutes apart midway through the fourth quarter to seal the first victory of the season.

Wozniak, Fuhrman and Izzy Radel (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) each led the team with six shots on goal.

The KU defense held the Owls without a shot and without a penalty corner. Three different goalies appeared in the game in Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone), Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and Grace Dow (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), but none were forced into action.

Kutztown will next take on host Saint Michael's tomorrow, Sunday, at 2 p.m.
