GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The seventh-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team opened up the scoring in the third quarter with its first goal of the season, but Adelphi was able to score twice in the fourth to edge KU 2-1 in a non-conference, season opener for both teams Thursday afternoon at Motamed Field in Garden City, N.Y.

Senior
Rose Moore (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) broke a scoreless first half as both teams were shaking off any rust from the offseason. Moore scored in the run of open play after a pass from classmate
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin). Wozniak, who was third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in points last season with 45, gets right into the scoring column in 2019. It's her 80th career point.

Sophomore
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) got the start in the cage and finished with four saves, the second-highest total of her career.
Â
The Golden Bears (0-1 overall) outshot the Panthers 14-12 overall and 10-6 on goal, but Adelphi had the advantage in penalty corners, 10-6.
Â
After a deadlock through the opening two quarters, Moore found the back of the cage just 5:29 into the third quarter to put the Maroon and Gold ahead. KU held much of the possession on its offensive third that quarter, firing five shots and earning four corners, but Panthers goalie Angelina Saunders helped keep her team at just the one-goal deficit, making critical saves. She recorded nine on the day.
Â
Adelphi tied it back up with a goal 0:44 into the fourth quarter on a low cross that was one-timed past Dotterweich. It was back-and-forth the rest of the way as both teams had their chances at the cage. But with just 1:00 remaining, the Panthers snuck one in off a rebound in front of the cage.

Kutztown remains on the road as it will compete in the Saint Michael's Tournament in Colchester, Vt. KU will take on Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m., followed by the host school Saint Michael's the following day, Sunday, at 2 p.m.
