Women’s soccer outshoots Millersville, but Marauders put more away as KU falls 3-0

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer had its fair share of scoring chances, but was unable to break through and were defeated 3-0 by No. 15 Millersville Wednesday afternoon at Keystone Field in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division game.

The Golden Bears (2-3 overall, 1-3 PSAC East) outshot the Marauders (6-0, 4-0) 9-8 overall, but just two of their shots were on goal, compared to six for Millersville. KU had the advantage 6-5 in shots in the first half, including two within the first 10 minutes of action by senior captain Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico). Her streaking runs down the right flank allowed her space to fire two shots, but both wound up to the left of the Marauders net. She led KU with three shots.

Millersville, who leads the PSAC in scoring with 3.5 goals per game, reached its average. The first one came from the right leg of Kay Liebl in the 16th minute. Her goal came as the KU defense was trying to clear the zone, but the ball bounced up and was hit one-time by Liebl past Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who finished with a game-high three saves, which also tied a season-high.

Kutztown's best opportunity of the game came at the 39:44 mark of the opening half when junior Sarah Reidy (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) received a pass near the top of the 18-yard box and curled a shot that soared over the Millersville goalie destined for the back of the net. But it had just a little too much air and hit off the crossbar and landed out of bounds. It was a break for a team that has not yet allowed a goal all season.

The Marauders doubled up the score just before halftime when Michelle Belcher sent a dipping shot towards the back-right corner that beat the out-stretched arms of Bracken. In the second half, Alexis Spencer gave Millersville its third goal from a different player, as she scored in the 71st minute.

There was a combined 13 corner kicks taken between the teams, with Millersville leading 8-5 in the category.

Kutztown will travel to Shippensburg for its next game on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1:30 p.m.
