PSAC Game Notes
Â
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team scored the game-winning touchdown with 0:15 left to earn a hard-fought victory on the road last weekend at California (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover.
Â
Collin DiGalbo (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) connected with
Jack Pilkerton (La Plata, Md./La Plata) for a 34-yard touchdown pass that gave KU the 35-28 win.
Â
KU will host Gannon Saturday, Sept. 21, at 12:05 p.m. at Andre Reed Stadium for Family Day.
Â
The Golden Bears (2-0 overall, 1-0 PSAC) have won back-to-back games to open up their season for the second consecutive season. Last year they won their first seven games to start the year. East Stroudsburg and West Chester are the lone other teams at 2-0 overall in the PSAC East.
Â
Cal U had tied the game at 28 just over two minutes earlier when Nelson Brown bulldozed his way off the left side and into the end zone, but the Bears' offense turned to its leaders down the stretch.
Â
Nyiem Nevarez (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) returned the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to set KU up with solid field position at its own 40. DiGalbo and Pilkerton connected for 18 yards and
Diego Torres (York, Pa./West York) ate up 14 yards on another reception to set the Golden Bears up with 3rd and 2 from the Cal U 37-yard line with under a minute remaining. DiGalbo took a designed run just past the first down marker on the very next play to move the chains.
Â
That set up Pilkerton's heroics. The senior tight end came open across the middle on 2nd and 10 and DiGalbo hit him in stride. Pilkerton shed Vulcans' defensive back Aaron Brown at the 20 and trotted in for the go-ahead score.
Â
Shawn Turber-Ortiz (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) compiled a game-high 14 tackles and also came away with an interception. The redshirt-junior was voted the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week this week for his performance. He joins DiGalbo, who won Offensive Athlete of the Week after week one, to give the Maroon and Gold two award winners two weeks into the season.
Â
In Gannon's last game last weekend, West Chester jumped out in front early with 21 first-quarter points and was able to hold off the Golden Knights 48-14.
Â
This will be the fifth meeting between the two programs on separate ends of the state, with each team winning twice. In the last meeting, Sept. 15, 2018, Kutztown scored 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to earn a 48-33 road victory at Gannon, also in week three.
