SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – Senior
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) of the Kutztown University women's soccer team scored the game's only goal and helped lead KU to a 1-0 road win at Shepherd University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game Wednesday afternoon.
The victory gave the Golden Bears (2-2 overall, 1-2 PSAC East) their first conference win of the season and helped snap a two-game skid which involved setbacks to nationally-ranked teams in Millersville and East Stroudsburg last week.
Zwiercan's second goal of the year came in the 73rd minute off of an assist from fellow senior captain
Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn). It was Miller's first assist since the 2017 season. She, along with
Kaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic),
Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Molly McHarg (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) were stout in front of goal all game long. Senior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was never forced into action and she was able to earn her second win and shutout of the season. Bracken now has 34 wins and 24 shutouts in her career, both program-records.
Kutztown outshot Shepherd 19-4 total in the game, 6-0 on goal. KU also held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Kupiec led all of KU with four shots, while
Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia),
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and
Brittany Arentz (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) all had three shots.
KU has a week off before its next game, back at home at Keystone Field on Wednesday, Sept. 25, against Millersville at 3 p.m.
