MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Four days after knocking off previous No. 1 Shippensburg, the fourth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team attempted to take down new No. 1 Millersville on Wednesday night at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) scored on a penalty stroke to give the Golden Bears an early first quarter lead, but the Marauders got a penalty stroke goal of their own from Sol Ortiz-Kreiner with 4:09 to play to slip past KU, 2-1.
Marci Scheuing's team was well-prepared for another battle and played Millersville (4-0) evenly through three quarters. Shots were 4-3 in favor of the Maroon and Gold and penalty corners were even at four aside heading into the fourth.
The Marauders applied consistent pressure over the final 15 minutes, however, outshooting the Bears 8-1 and earning five additional corners.
With under five minutes to play, the hosts were awarded a pair of corners. Sophomore goalie
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) came up big with a pair of stops on Erica Tarsi and then a third on Pili Zaballa, but during the ensuing scramble the ball was played illegally by KU as it tried to keep the ball out of the cage and Ortiz-Kreiner was awarded a stroke.
Kutztown was on the move early and earned a corner less than six minutes in following a nice feed up field from
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) to
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin). Good passing from the Bears off
Leigh Roselli's (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) insert led to chances for Fuhrman and
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), but both were denied by Marauder goalie Autumn Peters.
Millersville was whistled for an infraction off the rebound of Dusman's shot and Donato was awarded a stroke. She zipped the attempt by Peters for her fourth goal of the season. The goal was the first allowed by Peters this season.
Less than seven minutes later, following a corner, top-ranked Millersville scored the equalizer off the stick of Maddy Christen.
Millersville finished with an 11-5 edge in shots, including 7-2 on goal. Dotterweich made five saves to Peters' one.
The Golden Bears are off this weekend before heading to East Stroudsburg next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
