EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The fifth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team proved it only takes a matter of seconds to turn a game around at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday afternoon.
Faced with defending a corner early in double overtime, the Golden Bears saw All-American midfielder
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) intercept a pass and send fellow All-American
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) on attack. Wozniak took on a defender, pulled up just inside the shooting circle and placed a beautiful backhanded shot into the cage to give Kutztown a 2-1 victory over the third-ranked Warriors.
Wozniak's golden goal ended an evenly-played game by two of the nation's top teams. It also gave the Bears their second win over a ranked opponent and the Warriors their first loss this season. Kutztown (5-2) outshot ESU 8-7 and penalty corners were eight aside.
The Maroon and Gold scored first for the seventh time in as many games when Fuhrman found the left side of the cage with a shot 6:44 into the game. Off a corner,
Molly Bobjak's (New Castle, Del./Padua Academy) pass attempt towards the goal mouth deflected right to Fuhrman who wasted no time releasing it. Warrior goalie Maddie Richie could barely react.
ESU (7-1) took advantage of a corner just over 20 minutes later to knot the score at one late in the second quarter. The Warriors initial shot off the insert was blocked by
Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), but Hannah Barbush won the battle to the loose ball and slapped a shot in from near the penalty stroke line.
Both teams had chances to go in front during the second half. Wozniak nearly put the Golden Bears back in front early in the third, but her shot rang the crossbar and stayed out. Maddie Kline would hit the post in the waning stages of the period.
Richie and KU's
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) also did their jobs, making multiple saves between the second half and overtime periods to keep the game tied. Each goalie finished with three saves.
Fuhrman's stellar defensive play and the ensuing counterattack that ended in Wozniak's game-winner took all of 15 seconds to develop. It was Kutztown's second overtime winner, following
Rachel Dusman's (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) goal to beat then No. 1 Shippensburg on Sept. 14.
Wozniak tallied a game-high three shots, while Fuhrman added a pair. The Warriors' Celeste Veenstra, the PSAC's shot leader and third-leading scorer, was held pointless on just two shots.
If there was one unfortunate for KU, it was that Wednesday's matchup didn't count in the conference standings. Though the Bears have already played league foes Slippery Rock, Shippensburg, Millersville and ESU, the conference schedule doesn't begin until Friday at Slippery Rock. Kutztown and ESU will meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 8, this time at Andre Reed Stadium.
Kutztown travels west to face The Rock on Friday at 5 p.m.
