KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 24th ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team celebrated its brand-new turf complex at Keystone Field Saturday evening, and spent time with alumni, fans and KU administration in a night that will be remembered in program history, breaking a Keystone Field attendance record.
With the previous Keystone Field mark set at 450 back on Sept. 9, 2017, Kutztown welcomed an attendance number of over 600-plus for the first time under the lights.
On the field, the Golden Bears (1-2 overall, 0-2 PSAC East) dropped their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East home-opener to East Stroudsburg University 3-0, and got all three goals in the second half from freshman Melissa Herrera.
On a special night for the KU women's soccer program, they had hoped to christen the new field with a victory, but the support from the campus, administration, alumni and fans proved to be the highlight of the night.
Kutztown played with passion and determination in front of an electric atmosphere, and it showed in the numbers. KU outshot the Warriors (3-0, 2-0) 14-8 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. East Stroudsburg had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, and one player tallied all of the scoring for ESU. Kutztown and its offensive attack, including
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico),
Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) and
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford). The trio had all but one shot, which was by
Sam LaBianca (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South).
Herrera had a breakout second half, netting all three of her goals during a 13-minute stretch.
Kutztown will play at Shepherd University, the conference's newest member, this coming Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 3:30 p.m. It will be back on the Keystone Field turf on the following Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 3 p.m.
