KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Backed by a .416 hitting percentage, the Kutztown University women's volleyball team stormed to a 3-0 sweep of Saint Michael's in its opening match of the Kutztown Classic on Friday morning at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears held the Purple Knights to six points in both the first and third sets, winning 25-6, 25-14, 25-6.
Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) continued her hot start to the season with 16 kills and no errors on 28 attempts (.571). She's averaging 4.65 kills per set over Kutztown's (4-1) first 17 sets and hitting .306.
Kutztown also received five kills and seven digs from
Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College), libero
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) had nine digs and
Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) totaled a match-high 17 assists.
The Maroon and Gold scored 21 of the first 24 points in the first set and never looked back. Owen had six kills and a block assist, while
Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) was in on a pair of blocks. KU attacked at a .440 clip in the set with 11 kills and no errors on 25 tries.
Saint Michael's (0-4) used two kills from Molly Clarke to remain in contention through the midway point of the second. It was just 13-11 KU when an Owen kill started a 11-3 run to end the set.
Kutztown scored 15 unanswered points to take an 18-4 lead in the third and won 22 of the final 24 points. The victory was No. 598 in head coach
