KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) went for a season-high 20 kills, but visiting Notre Dame (Ohio) pulled out closely contested third and fourth sets to hand Kutztown a 3-1 loss Friday night at Keystone Arena.
Owen was targeted often by her setters, racking up 58 attempts. After Notre Dame won the first set 21-18, the junior outside hitter from Hatboro came alive with seven kills on 11 swings in the second.
The Golden Bears (4-2) broke away from an 8-8 deadlock with kills from
Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Owen, and two
Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) aces. A pair of Falcon attacking errors made it 14-8 in favor of the hosts and they would not trail again in the set, winning 25-21.
Kutztown would rally from five points down to twice serve for the set in a momentous third, but Notre Dame (6-1) took advantage of a service error and Paige Staudacher's ace to pull out a 29-27 victory. Blaire Barr provided six of her 12 kills in the set and teammate Katie Richardson added five.
Another rally by the Maroon and Gold in the fourth came up just a bit short. KU pulled within 24-23 on back-to-back combo blocks by
Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and Patterson, but Kaye Dregalia came up with the clinching kill for the Falcons.
Owen accounted for more than a third of Kutztown's 162 attack attempts on the night, totaling 20 kills and six digs.
Britney Hewitt (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) had eight kills and hit .500, and Chalton also hit .500 while chipping in six kills.
James completed a double-double with 24 assists and 14 digs, freshman
Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) put up 21 assists and eight digs, and libero
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) recorded a team-high 20 digs.
Three Notre Dame players reached double figures in kills, led by Mary Kate McHugh's 18. Staudacher had 47 assists and 10 digs, while Roberta Jokubauskait and Barr were stellar defensively at the net with 10 and nine blocks, respectively. Barr nearly completed a triple-double adding 12 kills and nine digs.
Kutztown wraps up the weekend with a pair of matches Saturday at Keystone Arena. The Bears take on Salem at 10 a.m. and Goldey-Beacom at 6 p.m.
