BOWIE, Md. -- Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had 13 kills and
Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) 15 assists as Kutztown hit .273 in a timely 3-0 road victory over Bowie State Tuesday evening.
The Golden Bears (3-1) collected a match-high 15 kills in a 25-18 first-set victory and were never challenged from there, winning the second, 25-5, and completing the sweep, 25-11.
Owen, the early-season PSAC leader in kills, accounted for nearly half of her total on the night with six in the opening set. The junior had four kills and
Haylee Holsopple (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added two during KU's 13-2 surge to open the match.
Kutztown raced out to a 6-0 lead in the second behind an ace and kill from James. Shortly thereafter, the visitors ran off 11 consecutive points to increase their advantage to 17-3. Four straight points came on aces from
Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College), while
Lauren Jackson (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) provided a pair of kills. Bowie State's five points were the fewest allowed in a set by the Golden Bears since yielding just four to Cheyney on Oct. 15 of last season.
Bowie State didn't help its cause with negative hitting percentages in the second and third sets, and a -.226 (10 kills-24 errors-62 attempts) percentage for the entire match. The Bulldogs (1-1) committed 10 errors in the third, which along with three Owen kills, helped KU close it out.
The Maroon and Gold amassed 31 kills on 66 attempts and also registered a season-high 10 aces, half of those coming from Henderson.
Jackson finished with five kills, while
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the Bears with seven digs. James contributed six digs.
Alana Matson led the hosts with three kills and three blocks.
Kutztown will take to its home floor at Keystone Arena for the first time when it opens play in the Kutztown Classic at 11 a.m. on Friday against Saint Michael's.
