FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Kutztown University men's rugby team pulled away in the second half, scoring 21 straight points, to defeat Mary Washington 36-8 last Saturday in Fredericksburg, Va.
With just a one-score match at 15-8 at halftime, KU needed some breathing room, and found it via three consecutive tries.
It was a somewhat monumental win early in the season for the Golden Bears (2-0 overall), as Mary Washington is the defending Division II national champion. It was the first game at the Division I level for the Eagles, the newest member of the Rugby East Conference.
KU tries were scored by
Matt Gelhuas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira),
Keyon McCloud-Holman (Philadelphia, Pa./Benjamin Franklin),
Callum Bartlett (Southend, Essex/Westcliff),
Kobie Tuckson (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) and
Daquan Perry (Philadelphia, Pa./Conestoga).
Thorne O'Connell (Johannesburg, South Africa/Jeppe) had a penalty kick and tallied four conversions.
Kutztown returns home for its first Rugby East showdown, hosting Army this Saturday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. at North Campus Pitch.
