Chestnut Hill races to 8-4 win over baseball

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Chestnut Hill scored all of its runs in the first four innings and finished the day with nine stolen bases to defeat the Kutztown University baseball team, 8-4, in a non-conference game at North Campus Field on Wednesday.

The visiting Griffins wasted no time showing off their speed on the bases. Ameir Uzzell swiped second and third following a lead-off single, while Sam Barletta and Franklin Ramirez also recorded steals in a four-run first. Jared Healey provided an RBI single and Andrew Dietz a sacrifice fly. Chestnut Hill's two other runs in the inning came via wild pitches.

Kutztown (5-30) got a run back on its own aggressive baserunning. With two down in the bottom of the first, Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) beat out a chopper to third and Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) never stopped running from second, beating the throw home.

Chestnut Hill (27-21) extended its lead to 7-1 with a three-run third, but Moretski picked up his second RBI of the afternoon with a sac fly for the Golden Bears in the bottom half of the inning.

Using a committee of arms, KU managed to hold the Griffins scoreless from the fifth inning on. Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata), Nick McAuliffe (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), Zach Peters (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and Moretski all threw a scoreless inning.

The Maroon and Gold closed a six-run gap to four with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Rottet singled home Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) in the seventh. Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) led off the eighth with a double and scored on a wild pitch.

Andrew Dietz went six innings and struck out six while giving up two runs on three hits to pick up the win for Chestnut Hill. Three relievers combined for seven additional strikeouts for the guests.

KU starter Michael Hunter (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) yielded four runs on two hits and three walks over two frames in taking the loss.

Blum was 2-for-4 and Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) had a pair of singles for Kutztown. Uzzell and Eric Gilham paced the Griffins with two hits apiece, and Chestnut Hill held a slim 8-6 advantage in hits.

The Golden Bears close out the 2019 season with a PSAC East series against Mansfield on Friday and Saturday. KU hosts the Mounties for two on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
