Golden Bears close home slate with sweep of Mansfield

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish's (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) masterpiece in game one and three-RBI efforts from Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) and Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) in game two helped the Kutztown University baseball team close out its home schedule at North Campus Field with a pair of PSAC East victories over Mansfield on Friday.

Fogarty-Harnish limited the Mounties to two hits as the Golden Bears took game one, 4-1, and late runs propelled KU to a 9-2 triumph in the back half of the twin bill.

GAME 1
Kutztown 4, Mansfield 1

Junior right-hander Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) continued his recent run of success by stifling the Mounties with a gem.

The Ephrata native tossed a two-hit, complete game and struck out seven. Over his last two starts, Fogarty-Harnish has allowed just two runs (one earned) on six hits and fanned 14 in picking up wins over West Chester and Mansfield. He also threw a scoreless inning of relief against Chestnut Hill this past Wednesday.

With their hurler setting the tone, the Golden Bears' (5-20 PSAC East, 6-30) lineup did its job, scoring four times over the first three innings. Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) accounted for half of KU's offense with an RBI single in the first and a run-scoring double in a three-run third.

Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) added a third-inning RBI single and Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) plated Rottet with a groundout later in the inning. Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) scored twice for the Maroon and Gold.

Mansfield's (3-22, 6-33) Brady Mengel, who was 2-for-2 with a walk, drove in his team's only run in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Hunter DePrimo struck out six over four innings, but took the loss with four runs (three earned) allowed on five hits.

Moretski was 2-for-3, Brandon Heere (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) doubled, and Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) and Miller had a single apiece for KU.

GAME 2
Kutztown 9, Mansfield 2

Kutztown turned a tight game into a runaway with seven runs between the fifth and sixth innings, completing the sweep with a 9-2 victory.

Heady baserunning from Jacoby Pate (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) on a Jeff Zebrowski (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) single allowed the Bears to take a 3-2 lead in the fifth and Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) added a two-run double to the gap in left before the inning was through.

Jake Augustus (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) doubled, Pate was hit by a pitch and Zebrowski walked to load the bases with one out in the sixth, before Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) drilled a double off the fence in right to score a pair and make it 7-2. A Miller RBI groundout and Rottet RBI single provided the final margin of victory.

A trio of seniors enjoyed strong performances in their final home game as Golden Bears (6-20 PSAC East, 7-30). Miller went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Villa was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Zebrowski finished 2-for-2 with a triple, walk, RBI and game-high three runs scored.

Fellow senior Garrett Alread (Victor, N.Y./Victor) started and held the Mounties (3-23, 6-34) to two runs (one earned) on five hits through 4.1 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Nick McAuliffe (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) recorded his first career victory with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and fanned two.

The Golden Bears got to MU starter Bryce Zaparzynski for five runs on eight hits in five innings. Jake Manke didn't fare much better, giving up four runs during an inning of work.
