WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh inning as the Kutztown University baseball team upset West Chester, 2-1, in game one of a PSAC East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Rams forged a split with a 13-0 shutout in game two.
GAME 1
Kutztown 2, West Chester 1
A timely hit from
Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) and complete game from starting pitcher
Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) allowed Kutztown to pull out a 2-1 stunner in game one.
Despite being separated by 18 wins, it was the underdog Golden Bears that struck first on
Jacoby Pate's (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) one-out RBI single in the second.
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.), who led off the inning by drawing a walk and advanced to third on
Jake Augustus' (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) single, trotted home with the game's first run.
Fogarty-Harnish did his part to make the lead stand up for better than five innings. He worked around traffic on the bases in every inning, but kept the Golden Rams (12-9 PSAC East, 22-13) off the board until Joe Zirolli sent a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
Pate and Villa picked up their hurler for a fine effort, though, as Kutztown (4-17, 5-26) regained the lead in the seventh. Pate was plunked, stole second and raced home on Villa's two-out single to right field. Fogarty-Harnish struck out Justin Horn to end it as WCU stranded the tying run at second.
Augustus and
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) had two hits apiece and KU outhit West Chester, 6-4.
Fogarty-Harnish allowed just four hits and struck out seven while throwing 114 pitches in his second complete game of the season. WCU's Zach Rice was the tough-luck loser with six strikeouts and two runs allowed over 6.1 innings.
GAME 2
West Chester 13, Kutztown 0
In it's pursuit of a postseason berth, West Chester could ill-afford a sweep at the hands of the Golden Bears. The hosts played with an increased urgency in game two, shutting out Kutztown 13-0.
West Chester (13-9 PSAC East, 23-13) scored a run in each of the first five innings, capped by a six-run fifth, to account for all of its scoring. Golden Rams' pitcher Jon Fisher was nearly untouchable with six innings of two-hit ball, no walks and eight strikeouts.
Jake Augustus (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) started the third with a double to left, but KU couldn't cash in with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout against Fisher to end the inning.
Kutztown's only other runner in scoring position would be
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) in the top of the seventh. He hit a lead-off double, but was throw out trying to swipe third.
Zach Wright drove in four runs and scored twice while going 2-for-3 at the dish for WCU. Jared Melone was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, Joe Zirolli also drove in three and Luke Cantwell had three hits, including a triple.
Kutztown's (4-18, 5-27) hits came from Augustus (two), Moretski and
Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin).
Garrett Alread (Victor, N.Y./Victor) took the loss with seven runs allowed (six earned) in four innings.
