SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's tennis team shut out an opponent for the first time since its 2017-18 season opener with Tuesday afternoon's 7-0 PSAC East sweep at Shippensburg.
The Golden Bears set the tone right away with 6-0 victories at first and second doubles.
Yasmeen Malik (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Alicia Pursell (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg), KU's top duo, defeated Gabbie Binder and Megan Moorhead, while the second doubles team of
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) and
Sarah Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) were victorious over the Raiders' Kaylin Gallagher and Kayla Tryanski.
With the doubles point already in hand, the No. 3 team of
Jillian Siefert (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and
Ashley Carter (Eynon, Pa./Valley View) took care of business against Maria Drake and Casey Miller, 6-2.
Kutztown (1-1 PSAC East, 3-8) continued to roll in singles with all six matches decided in straight sets.
Maher blanked Moorhead at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, and Grebosky earned her team-leading fourth singles win of the season, 6-1, 6-0, over Tryanski at No. 4.
Malik won all but one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gallagher at No. 1, and Pursell built on an unblemished first set to beat Binder 6-0, 6-3 for the clinching point.
No. 5
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) posted matching 6-1, 6-1 set victories over Shippensburg's (0-1, 1-11) Drake and Siefert closed out the match with her second consecutive singles win, 6-2, 6-3, over Miller.
