BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Kutztown's bid for a fourth consecutive victory was dashed in the second half, Tuesday, as Bloomsburg's offense found another gear in a 15-5 PSAC victory at Steph Pettit Stadium.
After limiting the conference's fifth highest scoring offense to just four goals in the first half, the Golden Bears ceded five in the opening five minutes of the second.
Grace Kelleher scored three of her game-high five goals during the surge, which turned a 4-2 BU lead into a seven-goal advantage.
Kutztown (3-3 PSAC, 4-5) got six saves from
Megan Vaughan (Prince Frederick, Md./Southern) in the first 30 minutes. Goals from
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western), her 20th of the season, and
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) on a man-down free-position attempt pulled the Golden Bears to within 4-2 with 10:51 left. Neither team would find the back of the net over the remainder of the half.
Bloomsburg would outscore KU by eight in the second half. Abby Bergman had all three of her goals in the period for the homestanding Huskies (4-2, 8-3). Kirsten Wozniak, Cailyn Gormley, Casey Hefner, Hannah Jaskuta and Allison Bardman joined Bergman and Kelleher as second-half goal scorers for BU.
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) potted a pair of goals for Kutztown in the second and Watkins tallied for the second time, her 10th goal of the season, with 2:12 to play.
Vaughan finished with nine saves, as the Huskies fired 33 shots her way.
Kutztown held a 4-3 edge in draw controls at half, but Bergman had seven of her game-high nine in the second to push BU to a 13-8 edge by game's end. Kutztown committed a season-high 28 turnovers and was just 18-of-27 on clears to the Huskies' 20-of-23.
Watkins and
Amanda Lehman (York, Pa./West York Area) led all players with five ground balls, while Watkins' three caused turnovers were tied for the team-high along with
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee).
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) found her way onto the scoresheet with an assist on Schmidt's first half goal.
The Golden Bears travel to Edinboro on Saturday at 1 p.m. for their seventh of 11 straight conference games.
