EDINBORO, Pa. -- Kutztown started quickly, withstood Edinboro's mid-game push and popped in four goals over the final 10 minutes to pull away for a 12-7 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference road victory over the Fighting Scots at Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) registered her second four-goal game of the season,
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) added a hat trick and
Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) scored two late, lifting the Golden Bears to their fourth win in five games. Kutztown (4-3 PSAC, 5-5) has already surpassed its highest conference win total (three) since the program's 2008 reboot with five PSAC regular season games remaining.
Behind goals from
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee),
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and Smith in the game's first 6:11, the visiting Bears surged to a 3-0 lead.
Smith scored her second goal of the afternoon with 15:25 left in the first half and Cafferata beat Edinboro goalie Candace McDole less than four minutes later for her 11th goal of the season, as KU maintained a three-goal lead, 5-2.
The Fighting Scots (1-6, 1-10) drew within a goal, 5-4, at the half and would tie the game for the first time on an Abi Kunz goal at 24:42 of the second. Kutztown's Smith and Edinboro's Sophie DePalma traded goals, leaving the score knotted at six with just over 20 minutes to play.
Second-year head coach
Jackie Stezzi's club showed its resolve down the stretch. The Maroon and Gold tallied six of the game's final seven goals,
Megan Vaughan (Prince Frederick, Md./Southern) made three of her nine saves, including one on a free position attempt, and
Amanda Lehman (York, Pa./West York Area) caused a pair of turnovers to help KU pull through.
Smith, Cafferata and Vaughan Ware finished as multi-goal scorers for Kutztown. Schmidt generated a goal and game-highs of three assists and six draw controls. Lehman forced three Edinboro turnovers and scooped up a team-leading four ground balls. Fitzpatrick had four draw controls.
DePalma scored three goals on six shots to top the Fighting Scots' offensive efforts. Olivia Thomas netted a pair and McDole was credited with 16 saves on 37 KU shots.
Kutztown was nearly perfect on clearing attempts going 18-of-19, including 11-of-11 in the second half. The Golden Bears also held a 13-8 advantage in draw controls.
Following two straight road games, Kutztown returns to Andre Reed Stadium this coming Wednesday, April 10, for a 5 p.m. game against East Stroudsburg.
