WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Logan Kemp (Hanover, Pa./South Western) won the deciding match in a third-set thriller and the Kutztown University men's tennis team opened PSAC play with a 4-3 victory at West Chester on Saturday.

The Golden Bears attained their first win of the season with a strong showing in singles, going 4-2 after dropping two of the three doubles matches to concede the first point of the afternoon to the Golden Rams (0-1 PSAC, 0-9).

Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) supplied KU's first point of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 straight set victory over Adam Courtemanche at third singles, and Renato Santos (Seixal, Portugal/Fernão Mendes Pinto) followed with his second straight win, 6-4, 6-0, against Devin Paulison at second singles.

Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) outlasted Chris Succi in three sets at the top flight 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, but West Chester fought back with points at fourth singles from Gavin Kenny (6-2, 6-4 over Benjamin Kelly (Medina, Ohio/Highland)) and sixth singles from Noah DeCampo (6-0, 6-4 over Bobby Frankenfield (Telford, Pa./Souderton)) to knot the score at three.

Kemp, a freshman from Hanover in search of his first collegiate win, took the first set from WCU's Brett Spano 7-5. Spano forced the match to a third set by taking the second set tiebreaker 7-6 (3), but Kemp responded with a 6-4 win in the third to deliver the Maroon and Gold its first win in eight matches (1-0, 1-7).

Kutztown also claimed a win at first doubles with Perugini and Santos blanking Succi and DeCampo, 6-0, but the Golden Rams won second and third doubles to take a 1-0 lead to singles.

The Golden Bears are back at home on the Keystone Courts Monday to host Salem in a non-conference match beginning at 2:30 p.m.
