KUTZTOWN, Pa. --
Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Renato Santos (Seixal, Portugal/Fernão Mendes Pinto) won matches in singles and doubles, Monday, but it wasn't enough to stop the ITA Atlantic Region's seventh-ranked team, Salem, in a 5-2 defeat at the Keystone Courts.
Perugini and Santos improved to 3-2 on the season at first doubles with a convincing 6-1 win over Andrzej Urjasz and Antonio Shaw. Salem (7-4) would win the remaining flight two and three matches by 6-1 counts, however, to capture the doubles point.
Kutztown (1-8) battled back to tie the match as Santos knocked off Patryk Garwacki 6-4, 6-4 at second singles and Perugini held off Urjasz 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-7 in a meeting of top flight players.
The Tigers went back in front with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep from Sibi Junior Soumahoro at fifth singles and clinched the victory when Eugene Bour rallied to top
Benjamin Kelly (Medina, Ohio/Highland) in a super tiebreaker at fourth singles 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.
Eric Gibson (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley) made his debut at sixth singles, falling to Shaw 6-1, 6-2.
The Golden Bears are home twice more this week, with Roberts Wesleyan visiting for a 1 p.m. non-conference match on Friday, before Millersville comes to campus for a 1 p.m. PSAC match on Saturday.
