Bloomsburg takes two from Golden Bears

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University baseball team surrendered a few big innings in dropping a PSAC East doubleheader to Bloomsburg, 7-2 and 8-2, Friday afternoon at North Campus Field.

BLOOMSBURG 7, KUTZTOWN 2
Game 1

Consecutive singles from Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) and Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) in Kutztown's first at-bats set up freshman Andy Blum's (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) RBI groundout in the bottom of the first as the hosts took an early 1-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Doug Conrad (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West) made it stand up through three innings and struck out two, before Bloomsburg (2-3 PSAC East, 12-6) broke through with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Nate Krizan three-run home run to center.

The Huskies tacked on three runs to their lead in the fifth on a Ben Newbert double and a two-run shot by Andrew Holmes.

Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) plated Rottet in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-2, but that was all the Golden Bears (1-4, 2-13) could manufacture against BU starting pitcher Ashton Raines. Raines fanned four and allowed eight hits in 6.2 innings, but turned the ball over to Ed Herbener for the final out after throwing 106 pitches.

Conrad also struck out four and gave up seven runs on nine hits in five innings. Michael Hunter (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) had one strikeout in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Kutztown's top of the lineup was productive, with Rottet, Miller and Moretski each going 2-for-4. Moretski had the Bears' only extra base hit with a seventh-inning double and catcher Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Lead-off hitter Jake Reed, Newbert and Krizan each had two hits for Bloomsburg.

BLOOMSBURG 8, KUTZTOWN 2
Game 2

Bloomsburg's six-run second inning was the difference as the Huskies completed Friday's swepp with an 8-2 victory in game two.

Nate Krizan opened the scoring for the visitors with a bases-lodaed walk. Gianni Sinatore and Jake Reed followed with RBI singles, Cole Swiger knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and Kyle OFier capped BU's breakout inning with a two-run double to the gap in right.

Kutztown got a run back in the bottom of the second when Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) sprinted home on a wild pitch, but the Huskies (3-3, 13-6) answered with a two-run single from Jake Reed in the third to make it 8-1.

Bloomsburg chased Golden Bears' starter Aaron Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) after three innings. Cleveland allowed eight runs on eight hits and struck out four. Garrett Alread (Victor, N.Y./Victor) would come on to fire four scoreless innings and strike out four of his own, but KU (1-5, 2-14) could never mount a comeback threat.

Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) pushed a single into right field that scored Lafferty in the fourth, for the second and final run allowed by BU's Nick Stoner.

Stoner fanned five in five innings and James Reardon IV provided two innings of scoreless relief.

Villa accounted for Kutztown's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. Jake Augustus (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) and Connor Teschko (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) each added a hit.

Reed was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Bloomsburg.
