Blum earns 500th career win, Golden Bears split at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Chris Blum earned career win No. 500 as head coach of the Kutztown University baseball team with the Golden Bears' 2-1 game two victory, Saturday, in a PSAC East doubleheader at Bloomsburg.

Kutztown snapped a six-game slide following the Huskies' 10-3 win in game one and made Blum the fifth coach --and third fastest-- in PSAC history to reach 500 wins at a conference school. Blum joins Jeff Messer (Slippery Rock), Harry Hillson (Mansfield), Art Fairchild (Shippensburg) and Mike Conte (Cal U) on the illustrious list.

Blum, now in his 17th season at KU, has averaged more than 31 wins per season while leading the Golden Bears to four PSAC championships, three regional titles and 10 NCAA Championship tournament appearances.

BLOOMSBURG 10, KUTZTOWN 3
Game 1

The Golden Bears led 3-0 before Bloomsburg scored 10 unanswered runs to capture game one and ensure itself a series victory.

Bloomsburg starting picher JJ Spehrley walked the bases loaded in the top of the first prior to plunking Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) with two outs, which allowed Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) to come home with the game's first run.

Miller drove in Jacoby Pate (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) on a fielder's choice and Zach Moretski's (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) single to the gap in right scored Brandon Heere (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) as the Golden Bears (1-6 PSAC East, 2-15) extended their lead to 3-0 in the second.

The Huskies (4-3, 14-6) barreled up a number of balls, using four doubles and a pair of home runs to rally for the win. Andrew Holmes homered for the second day in a row and was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Teammate Cole Swiger also homered, drove in two and scored twice.

Despite walking six Bears, Spehrley got through five innings with three runs (two earned) allowed on four hits to pick up the victory. Zach Newmyer worked a scoreless sixth and seventh for his third save.

Zach Peters (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) started for KU and surrendered five runs on five hits in four innings.

Kutztown's Moretski was 3-for-3 with his fifth double of the season.

KUTZTOWN 2, BLOOMSBURG 1
Game 2

Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) tossed a complete game seven-hitter and struck out seven in delivering Blum his milestone victory, and helping KU avoid a series sweep.

Kutztown (2-6, 3-15) established another early lead, scoring on a Bloomsburg miscue in the top of the first to make it 1-0.

The Huskies tied the game at one on Cole Swiger's RBI single in the third, but Connor Teschko (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) doubled home Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) in the top of the fourth with the go-ahead run after Blum led off the inning with a two-bagger.

Fogarty-Harnish clamped down on the Huskies lineup over the next three frames. Bloomsburg's only hit during the stretch was a lead-off double from catcher Jared Burcin in the fourth. The Huskies (4-4, 14-7) went down in order in the fifth and sixth, but found a way to make it interesting in the seventh.

Bloomsburg put the tying run 90 feet away and the winning run in scoring position with less than two outs, but third baseman Jake Augustus (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) snared Gianni Sinatore's grounder and fired home to Teschko, who applied the tag on pinch runner Anthony Viggiano to keep Kutztown in front.

Fogarty-Harnish got behind Jake Reed 3-1, but the Huskies' lead-off hitter watched strike two and swung through three to end the game. Kutztown's returning All-PSAC East Second Team pitcher fanned seven while giving up seven hits.

BU pitcher Chad Cooperman matched Fogarty-Harnish with seven strikeouts and took the loss while allowing just one earned run on five hits over six innings.

Kutztown had just five hits in the game (to Bloom's seven), all coming from the team's 5-9 hitters in the lineup.
