Baseball stumped by Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Shippensburg pitching stymied the Kutztown University baseball team for all 14 innings of Sunday's PSAC East doubleheader at North Campus Field. The Raiders allowed only six hits between the two games in sweeping the Golden Bears 7-0 and 3-0.

SHIPPENSBURG 3, KUTZTOWN 0
Game 1

Shippensburg starter Noah Inch carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before sophomore Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) broke it up with a one-out single between first and second. Raiders' second baseman Logan Williamson ranged to his left deep in the hole to try and make the play, but Moretski beat the throw.

It was Kutztown's only bright spot against Ship's junior southpaw. Inch finished off the complete game shutout victory with 10 strikeouts and three walks on just 104 pitches.

Though the Golden Bears (1-2 PSAC East, 2-11) were unable to generate offense, they only trailed 2-0 going into the sixth.

Williamson's two-out, two-run double to left against former Raider Aaron Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) gave the visitors an early lead. Shippensburg (2-1, 9-10) increased its advantage to 7-0 in the sxith on a bases-clearing double by Tommy Baggett and a two-run error by the Maroon and Gold.

Cleveland struck out five over five frames, but took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and walking five. In addition to drawing six walks, six Raiders were hit by a pitch.

Bagget was 2-for-4 and Anthony Vavaroutsos went 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored. For KU, Jeff Charles (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) and Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) each drew a walk, while Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) reached base on a hit by pitch.

SHIPPENSBURG 3, KUTZTOWN 0
Game 2

Despite Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish's (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) best efforts, Kutztown was unable to break through in game two and suffered its second shutout defeat of the afternoon.

Fogarty-Harnish fanned a career-high 10 and yielded three runs on six hits over six innings. The junior from Ephrata became the first KU hurler to strike out 10 or more in a game since Doug Conrad (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West) recorded 11 Ks in a victory over Fairmont State on March 10, 2017.

Unfortunately, the Golden Bears couldn't solve Raiders' starter Michael Hope. Hope went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out five.

Designated hitter Chase Zurawski's second-inning solo shot put Ship on top. Tommy Baggett (RBI double) and Logan Williamson (RBI single) added insurance in the third and that would be more than enough for Hope.

Kutztown (1-3, 2-12) threatened in the first by loading the bases with one out, but Hope rolled a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the jam.

Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) led off the fourth with a double and the Bears again had two runners in scoring position with less than two outs, only to see Hope strike out two straight hitters to escape unscathed.

Shippensburg's (3-1, 10-10) righty faced his final hurdle in the seventh after plunking lead-off hitter Jacoby Pate (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township). Hope got the next two batters, but walked Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) and allowed a Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) single to load the bases.

Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) came to the plate as the go-ahead run, but got a little too much air under an 0-1 pitch and flied out to center field to end the game.

Miller collected a pair of hits for KU. Pate reached base in all three of his plate appearances with a single (1-for-1), walk and hit by pitch. The senior also stole a base.

Baggett went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored for Ship, which outhit Kutztown 6-5. Zack Zoller doubled for his only hit in four at-bats.

Jeff Charles (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) relieved Fogarty-Harnish and sat down the side in order in the seventh.
