HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Kutztown's top two doubles teams were victorious, Monday, but
Renato Santos (Seixal, Portugal/Fernão Mendes Pinto) was the Golden Bears' only singles winner in a 5-2 loss to Quincy at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.
KU prevailed in tough matches at first and second doubles, winning both in tiebreakers to claim a team point. The Bears' (0-5) top duo of
Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and Santos held off Brenden Everhart and Sam Contestabile, 7-6 (4), while
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Benjamin Kelly (Medina, Ohio/Highland) slipped by Erik Weiler and Collin Adams, 7-6 (5) at No. 2.
The Hawks (3-4) flexed their muscles in singles play with three straight set wins.
Santos was outstanding in taking second singles over Weiler 6-0, 6-2 for his second win of the year.
Perugini answered Everhart's 6-1 opening set win with a 6-2 victory in the second. Everhart pulled out a 10-8 win in the super tiebreaker.
Kutztown will face Charleston (W.Va.) in a match at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Raquet Club on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
