HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team battled one of the Atlantic Region's best Tuesday in Hilton Head Island, but Charleston (W.Va.) proved too much for the Golden Bears in a 7-0 sweep.
The Golden Eagles, returning NCAA Championship tournament qualifiers, got a 6-0 win from Bryson Tye and Ian Morrison at third doubles and a 6-1 victory by Alek Gracin and Thomas Andrews at second doubles to secure a point.
KU (0-5) won three games behind
Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Renato Santos (Seixal, Portugal/Fernão Mendes Pinto) in a 6-3 loss to Ben Lakeman and Joao Tayar at first doubles.
Junior
Benjamin Kelly (Medina, Ohio/Highland) had the most success in singles capturing three games in each set of a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Thomas Andrews at No. 4. Perugini fell 6-4, 6-1 to Lakeman at No. 1.
Charleston (3-1) is currently ranked fourth in the ITA Atlantic Region.
Kutztown ends its trip to HHI with another 2018 NCAA participant as it takes on defending Mountain East Conference runner-up Fairmont State at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Falcons are also regionally ranked, holding down the No. 6 spot in the Atlantic.
