Baseball drops two in North Carolina

WILSON, N.C. -- The Kutztown University baseball team dropped a pair of games Sunday as its spring break trip continued at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, North Carolina. The Golden Bears were defeated by West Virginia State, 17-3, and fell to Ohio Dominican, 5-4, in 11 innings.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE 17, KUTZTOWN 3
The Golden Bears struck first with Nick Lafferty's (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) first-inning sacrifice fly, but West Virginia State scored the next six runs and pulled away late with 11 runs over the final four innings.

Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua)t went 2-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBIs, and freshman Ronny Silvestro (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) was 2-for-3 for KU.

The Yellow Jackets amassed 19 hits, including nine for extra bases. Connor Slagill and Andrew Stone homered for WVSU (2-10).

Steve Wagner (Henderson, Nev./Boulder City) started on the bump for the Maroon and Gold, going three innings and striking out four while yielding five earned runs (six total). Michael Hunter (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) was strong in relief with two runs allowed and four strikeouts across four innings.

WVSU's Kenneth Daniels threw a 136-pitch complete game and struck out nine while scattering seven hits. Stone and Matt Harrison provided a majority of his offensive support, each finishing with four hits and four runs scored.

OHIO DOMINICAN 5, KUTZTOWN 4 (11)
Kutztown rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings when Brandon Heere (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) raced home on a wild pitch.

Mike Villa's (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) two-out single in the 10th plated Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) with the go-ahead run after Lafferty led off the inning with a double, but ODU responded with a run on an error to keep the game going.

A Jace Komminsk lead off walk and Tim Zeller double put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 11th. KU (1-7) opted to intentionally walk Colin Kaucher, who was 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs.

The decision paid off temporarily when Manny Vorhees popped out to Rottet at short for the second out. The Panthers' (5-6) next batter, Genesis Hillard, patiently worked a six-pitch at-bat, drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring in the winning run.

Ohio Dominican, which recently fell out of the NCBWA Division II Poll, struggled to generate much against returning All-PSAC East pitcher Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata).

The Ephrata native impressed in his first start of the season with seven strikeouts over six innings. Fogarty-Harnish gave up two runs on eight hits.

ODU's Mitchell Bault was just as sharp, fanning eight in seven innings while surrendering an unearned run.

Kutztown totaled 10 hits or more in a game for the third time this season. Four players: Brandon Heere (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg), Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) and Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had two hits for the Golden Bears.
